poolchemicalsYour pool might be a nice place to cool off during the warm months of the year but for kids, they spell hidden dangers such as from the chemicals you use and the pool itself which is a major cause of children’s death in the US when they accidentally fall into them and drown. Pool chemicals are caustic and can cause death, especially the chlorine powder most homeowners use. Chlorine can lessen the amount of available oxygen in the air and can cause chemical burns on the inner tissue of the lungs and trachea causing them to swell leading to suffocation. In conjunction to Chlorine, acids are sometimes used to control the algae growth to a minimum leaving the pool walls clean and free of the green slime. All these chemicals should be stored under lock and key, and should also be dispensed only in well-ventilated areas. Newly treated pools especially during shock treatment (once every three months or less) when pool experts suggest the addition of twice to three times the normal level of chlorine to kill off bacteria in the water can result in the evaporation of fumes that can cause health problems. Ensure this is done only during windy days to avoid having a pocket of chlorine gas low on the water and the surrounding ground.
